Working with the service sector requires researchers to have a strong interdisciplinary inclination and to be relevant to practice; solutions for STEM‐based tools in service organisations are much more challenging academically, because they are not easily found and require bespoke intellectual input.

Universities should recognise that siloed, mono‐disciplined mentalities therefore inhibit engagement with the service sector. To be truly interdisciplinary so as to encourage innovative research, service needs to be free of its disciplinary boundaries, and the paradigmatic research influences of each discipline. In short, service needs to evolve into a discipline in its own right. To engage with the service sector fully, service research should be liberated from school and departmental territories and sit autonomously within the university, free to bring in top academics of other disciplines to advance the cause of service innovation.

The issue of education, learning and skills is important for two reasons in relation to service innovation: firstly, innovation and the introduction of new technologies commonly involves concomitant investments in training and skill development by firms; secondly, lack of suitably qualified personnel can be a significant constraint to service firm and growth. Shortages of suitably qualified labour was rated as a significant barrier to service innovation, being rated the fourth most significant barrier from international survey data.

Two broad areas of skills need greater policy attention in relation to innovation in services:

*Management skills: very few people receive any formal training in innovation management from universities, and especially relative to those receiving training in the more established disciplines, such as marketing or accountancy or finance. Yet it is often argued that innovation management requires a broader mix of skills than is provided by traditional, disciplinary based approaches.
*Workforce skills: the tradition within the education and training systems has been to encourage high degrees of specialisation. Such specialisation is appropriate for economies based on highly decomposable tasks, but less appropriate where people need to interact and interrelate in the course of their work. Such interaction and inter-relations are much more common in services work, including innovation related service work, and here worker skills are increasingly found wanting.

There is, therefore, a need to adapt educational and training systems and develop degree curricula and training initiatives which prepare individuals for the demands of the service economy.

We are facing today an acknowledged demand to develop a large number of higher education programs in Service Science, Management and Engineering (SSME), emphasizing the need to create a format by itself, contrary to an implicit tendency to dissipate knowledge related to Service Science among already existing educational programs in specific domains.

It is in the framework of the POS-DRU Project no. 57748 "INSEED - Strategic Program Fostering Innovation in Services Through Open, Continuous Education" that the proposal of a reference model for a complex higher education program in SSME is formulated. The main artefact is the SSME model (figure 1) that proposes a modern vision on a complex educational model on three levels (undergraduate, masters and doctorate) to approach service innovation. It provides professional competencies in different service sectors and support for specific lifelong learning education for service innovation.

Figure 1. SSME model and service innovation multilevel framework - correlation

The SSME model defines different levels of higher education. It takes as a starting point the service innovation multilevel framework, over which the curricular areas, professional competencies, sets of disciplines and types of occupations available to students are superimposed.

The service sector accounts now for over 70% of the activities and employment in the more advanced economies, and has been growing in all countries. Innovation in services is critical for sustainable societies, and there is an increasing support from Information Technologies in providing new services. Service Science is an interdisciplinary approach to the engineering of services systems in which specific arrangements of people and technologies take actions that have value for others.

The main goal the Service Science Knowledge Environment (SS–KE) is to implement a collaborative environment that would gather together different academic partners with the overall aim of creating a modern educational framework in the areas of Science, Design and Management of services, while promoting service innovation in different service sectors.

The Service Science Knowledge Environment (SS–KE) targets also at creating a solid knowledge-based link between academia, industry and government, along with other European institutions. It supports sharing relevant information on Service Science that would be stored in a structured way based on a common vocabulary using an integrated ontology. From the technological point of view, wiki technologies are used for enabling the collaborative aspect of the environment. &nbsp;

The Service Science Knowledge Environment (SS–KE) is delivered as a service in the cloud. It approaches the conception and development of an open, collaborative, interactive environment to gather around universities, industry, governmental agencies and European institutions in order to foster service innovation by means of information / proves / technological transfer of the research results aiming to develop sustainable service systems innovation solutions.

The digital content to be created along with this knowledge environment in order to be collaboratively available is intended to be used in three different perspectives, defining three main functionalities:

1. Development of a data base to highlight an educational knowledge path on Service Science fostering service innovation in different service sectors, taking into consideration fundamental concepts related to Service Science (a) business oriented, b) IT oriented, and c) service orientation of processes;

2. Growth of the service companies visibility. This will allow companies to publish company case studies related to service innovation. In this approach, a data base on service innovation in different service sectors will be gradually built;

3. Report on new methods, tools and software applications. The new methods, tools, software applications, PoTs (Proof of Technology) and PoCs (Proof of Concepts) will be used to develop IT services and to accomplish service automation. All of these will eventually support service and service system innovation.

SOA is a business-IT-aligned approach in which applications rely on available services to facilitate business processes. Bridging IT and business requirements, which SOA intends to achieve, is a constantly increasing demand in today’s economy. Modern businesses are very flexible and have ever changing requirements, which in turn demand for flexible IT support. A business can be considered in terms of a set of business components that require each the synergistic operation of multiple business processes, each implemented by means of IT resources. Thus, implementing a Service Oriented Architecture usually involves the componentization of the enterprise or the development of applications that use services and the making of applications available as services so that other applications can use them. In this context, services can be viewed as reusable software components that are provided by a service provider and consumed by service requestors.

SOA can be used as a model at different levels. It can guide the use of IT technologies at a programming level, or, if looking from a middleware perspective, it can guide the way products and open-source software are designed. SOA can also be used at a process level as a model for the integration and management of business processes. Finally, at a business level, it can guide the way enterprises are componentized into business processes, enable them to be reusable and configurable. As such, SOA can represent a consultation model for the high-level transformation of an enterprise in two ways, either by realizing each business process through IT processes, or by integrating SOA-based IT resources to create new business processes in a more efficient way.
Thus, more than a solely architectural model for software development, SOA is a guideline for better managing business processes and enterprises. The operational model proposed by SOA in this sense is triangular, aiming to represent a backbone for the creation, registration, discovery and composition of distributed services. The model identifies three service roles and each entity in the service-oriented architecture can play one (or more) of these three roles:

*the Service provider is the one that provides the services; it consists of a network-addressable entity that accepts and executes requests from consumers, while publishing its services and interface contract to the service registry in order to make the service discoverable;

*the Service requestor (or service consumer) is usually an application, a software module or another service that requires a different service. It initiates the enquiry of the service in the registry, binds to the service and executes its provided function according to the interface contract;

*a Service broker (or service registry) enables the service discovery. It contains a repository of available services and allows for the lookup of service provider interfaces to interested service requestors.

<span style="font-size:medium;">SOA Operations</span>

<br/>There are three operations in a service-oriented architecture:

*Publish: a service description must be published so that it can be discovered and invoked by a service requestor;
*Discover: a service requestor locates a service by querying the service registry for a service that meets its criteria;
*Bind and invoke: After retrieving the service description, the service requestor proceeds to invoke the service according to the information in the service description.
Hence, service is a superordinate concept that includes both tangible and intangible goods (‘services’).Service is what is always exchanged, either in Direct Service interactions (services) or in Indirect Service interactions, through tangible goods (products). Self-service for instance, that is the application of resources by the beneficiary entity for itself, can be considered a special kind of Direct Service.
